Gardner discusses his Mormon upbringing in Berkeley, Calif., his early years at the University of California working with
the Alumni Association during his doctoral studies at Berkeley, and as Assistant to the Chancellor at the Santa Barbara campus;
serving as President of the University of Utah; the work of the National Commission on Excellence in Eucation and its report
"A nation at risk"; his appointment and activities as President of the University of California, including fiscal, academic,
internal and external affairs, appointments, long-range planning, and retirement; and finally his joining the Hewlett Foundation.
